Disaster Recovery

Backups and Disaster Recovery are often thought of as the same thing. The truth is that backups are just one piece needed during a disaster recovery. A well thought out, documented, and tested Disaster Recovery Plan is necessary to protect your business from an unforeseen disaster.

What is a Disaster Recovery Plan?

A Disaster Recovery Plan is a written document containing detailed instructions on how to recover an organization's IT infrastructure with little to no data loss and minimal down time after a disaster.

What is the process of creating Disaster Recovery Plan?

When designing a Disaster Recovery Plan the varying types of data and programs at a business are analyzed to decide how critical they are to the operations of the business. It is then decided where the identified data and software will be recovered, how it will be recovered, how quickly it needs to be recovered and how much data loss is considered toleraterable.

Sites, Hardware, and Backup plans are designed around those parameters. For backups, some data can be backed up solely to the cloud, while other data needs to be stored on site for speed of recovery. On site backups should be replicated to the cloud or another office location to protect against a disaster at the primary location. A secondary replication to a location outside of the immediate area is recommended as well to protect from catastrophic events affecting an entire region.

Testing of your Disaster Recovery Plan from each backup data location should be performed regularly to ensure the viability of both the backups, and the procedure.
