The network is the literal backbone of IT infrastructure and it's importance should not be understated. Networks that have been pieced together over time are often riddled with bottlenecks, lack redundancy, and create a frustrating user experience. Firewalls that are improperly configured, or do not take advantage of the latest in edge security are simply too high of a risk these days.

I am using a switch from the office supply store, and it works just fine.

It may "work", until it does not. Off the shelf switches from the local office supply or electronics store lack in throughput, offer no redundancy, and rarely have manageability. Business class switches are higher performing with higher throughput, have switch management with configuration options like VLANs and LAG Groups, and offer redundancy through switch interconnects with ample throughput to avoid bottlenecks between switches.

A firewall is just a firewall, right?

Absolutely Not. First and foremost, off the shelf firewalls should never be used for a business. Firewalls must use the latest in Deep Packet Inspection and be constantly updated to ensure they have the latest solutions for the latest method of attack. For business continuity purposes, features like cloud management and high availability are essential.
